Reflection

For my ceramics semester 1 final, I transformed a Henry Mattise artwork into a three-dimensional clay piece. This project challenged me to think about how his flat shaped and flowing forms could exist in physical space. Working in clay helped me see the difference in painting and ceramics.

Background

Henry Matisse created this painting in 1947, I chose this piece because I really like how the figure didn't look normal and almost distorted. Also I felt like it was more on the easier side witch was good considering I started my final really late.

About Matisse

Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, a small town in northern France, and grew up in nearby Bohain-en-Vermandois. He originally studied law in Paris, but after discovering painting during an illness, he changed his path and enrolled in art studies. Matisse trained at the Académie Julian and later studied under Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was encouraged to develop his own style rather than copy traditional methods.
